The Rise of Social Activism:  Why You Need to be Listening to Your Customers

In late December 2011 it was discovered that one of the key supporters of the US SOPA legislation was the world’s largest domain registrar, GoDaddy. This was curious given that nearly every other major tech company considered SOPA and PIPA to be a clear and present threat to not only their business activities but also to the internet itself. Many people were outraged by this support and a boycott of GoDaddy was organised, beginning on the social aggregator Reddit but soon spreading through Facebook, Twiiter and other social networks. The result wasn’t just social activism, it sent major shockwaves throughout the corporate world and underlined just why every business needs to be listening to its customers.

[Video] The Christmas Card

Here’s some fun to end the week. This is reputed to have been made by Terry Gilliam in 1968 for a special Christmas Day show, Do Not Adjust Your Stocking. Unfortunately I’ve been unable to find a source (that isn’t self-referential) but in any case the video is darkly funny. There’s also this quote allegedly made by Gilliam about how he conceived the idea:

I went down to the Tate [Gallery] and they’ve got a huge collection of Victorian Christmas cards so I went through the collection and photocopied things and started moving them around. So the style just developed out of that rather than any planning being involved. I never analysed the stuff, I just did it the quickest, easiest way. And I could use images I really loved.

I hope it’s true.

Anyone that has even a vague acquaintance in Singapore knows that this week has been filled with monumental difficulties for the tiny island city state: the trains stopped working. Now this might be at most an inconvenience in most other cities around the world, but in Singapore this is a national disaster. In a country where people complain vehemently if a train is even 1 minute late, the thought of their pride and joy – the best public transport system in the world – not working because of faults along three of the four lines was an unprecedented humiliation.

The crisis was made worse because in this technology -obsessed nation many people turned to their social networks to complain and rant. Unfortunately SMRT Corporation, one of the companies that administer the train service, wasn’t actively involved in any of the major platforms during the crisis: they were caught asleep at the wheel and by the time they woke up their entire PR and communications strategy had run off the rails. [Video] KLM’s Social Seatmates: Marketing Opportunity?

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have announced that starting in the new year passengers will be given the opportunity to choose who they are seated with on flights by using Facebook and Linkedin profiles. While the video by the Taiwanese group Next Media Animation ridicules the concept as a way to join the Mile High Club the program does pose some pretty interesting considerations for business.

Can it be used for targeted marketing? While the thought of being stuck on a flight alongside a salesmen hocking their wares is one right out of a Hollywood nightmare, a more diplomatic use of deliberately targeting high value prospects using subtle marketing techniques could have merit. Popular CRMs are already integrating social networks into their engines to provide sales and marketing additional research tools.

Seatmates could become a valuable sales tool in the near future especially as other airlines (Malaysia Airlines launched its MHbuddy service in February) roll out similar systems. If it did become widely available can you see your business using this for your marketing?
